Many people like the idea of owning and electric vehicle (EV). An electric car is definitely much cheaper to run compared to a conventional gasoline driven vehicle. Many car owners had a rough experience back in 2008 when local gasoline prices shot through the roof. That is the main reason why people are more receptive to EV. Unfortunately, a new electric car from the dealership is still quite expensive. To save cost, you can convert your gas driven car to electric via a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach. The fastest way to initiate a retrofitting project is by using EV conversion kits.
There are many electric car conversion kits in the market. The challenge is to find the right kit made for your car model. The process of retrofitting an EV involves the removal of the internal combustion engine and replacing it with an electric motor. Since the engine is gone, all its adjoining components such as gas tank, fuel line, fuel pump, exhaust pipe, radiator etc are to be taken out as well. To generate torque, the electric motor is connected directly to the existing transmission. This is where an electric vehicle conversion kit will come in handy.
Most retrofitting kit will come with a joining metal plate and a shaft coupler. These are the most important components for the project. The joining plate will be used to align both the motor and transmission shaft. Any misalignment will affect the efficiency of the motor and the overall performance of the EV. Since both of the shafts have different sizes and dimensions, the coupler will be used to link them both seamlessly. Without the EV conversion kit, these two major parts have to be custom made which will be very expensive.
