Gasoline to Electric Car Conversion - Save Costs With Electric Vehicles

Car owners around the world were having a challenging time back in mid 2008. Global crude oil prices went to a dizzying level of $150 per barrel and that in effect has pushed local gasoline prices to a new height. Many vehicle owners are frantically searching for alternative energy source with the hope of reducing their energy expense bill. One solution is the idea of using electric power as an alternative to fossil fuel. For the time being, a brand new electric vehicle (EV) in the market is still relatively expensive. The best option to own an EV is to convert your existing gasoline driven car to run on electricity.

The process of electric car conversion is actually quite simple. What we have to do is to remove the internal combustion engine and replace it with a DC electric motor. Since the engine is gone, all its connecting components such as fuel line, gas tank, radiator, fuel pump, exhaust pipe etc are to be removed as well. To move the vehicle, the electric motor is connected straight to the existing transmission. To power the motor, a series of deep cycle batteries are used. To save cost, you can use recycled or reused batteries from golf carts.

To retrofit a gasoline driven car to electric is a straight forward process. However, it is not recommended if you are not familiar with the internal workings of a vehicle. In this case, you can still own an EV by outsourcing the conversion project to a professional mechanic. By doing this, you will incur some capital investment but you will save a lot of time and headache.
